You might hear a sound you want to check out, come up out of a relaxed alpha brain wave pattern, see what caused the noise and decide whether to drop back into relaxation or not. Such as swaying in prayer, saying the rosary even knitting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Under that broad definition, about one-half of Americans perform some sort of meditation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Massachusetts General Hospital researchers scanned the brains of 20 people who meditated regularly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These people had four regions of cortex -- the rind of the brain, associated with higher functions like memory and decision making -- that were thicker than in 15 subjects who didn't meditate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition, the researchers found signs that one area of the cortex seemed to have aged less quickly than it did in non-meditators. The study did not look at whether those brain differences had a noticeable impact on behavior, but researchers are now doing follow-up work to assess that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The findings ''provide the first evidence that alterations in brain structure are associated with Western-style meditation practice, possibly reflecting increased use of specific brain regions," said Sara Lazar, of Harvard.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In other Harvard-affiliated work, researchers reported that by using a device that can analyze every breath a person exhales, they could objectively measure the depth of relaxation a person had achieved. People who reached deeper states of relaxation exhaled more nitric oxide, a gas known to relax the smooth muscles in arteries, and aid blood flow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;''Our results provide initial evidence of how the relaxation response intervention and other mind/body approaches might lower blood pressure," said Jeffery A. Dusek. ''In the near future, it may even be possible to use our new technique to determine an effective 'dose' of meditation for a given person, or to identify characteristics of individuals who best respond to the relaxation response intervention."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another new study, from the University of Kentucky, found that meditation could offset the sluggishness of sleep deprivation better than a nap.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Researchers tested volunteers on a button-pressing speed task, and found that even novice meditators improved their performance more after 40 minutes of meditation than after a 40-minute nap. Meditation helped even after a full night of sleep deprivation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ultimately, scientists aim to understand not only the powers of monks but the everyday experiences of amateur meditators for lowering high blood pressure and increasing energy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;There are many ways to meditate. Here’s one that I enjoy.&lt;/center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Focus on your breath flowing deep into your abdomen. Contract the abdomen lightly on the exhale. Breath slow and regular, don’t hold or force inhalation or exhale.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Count each breath beginning at 1. Count upwards ending at the 5th breath. Then count each breath beginning at 5 and going down to 0. Then mentally, silently say a single syllable word that gives you the desired sensation with each breath. Read at a slow but regular pace with a neutral voice. Don’t try for hypnotic or dramatic tone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make notes about your experiences and responses afterwards as soon as possible as some will fade.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can receive information in pictures, emotions, sounds, thoughts and smells. Be open and aware of all sensory input. Accept everything as a clue. What can appear trivial in time might become more significant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take everything lightly as if you’re playing a mental game. Avoid questioning the validity of what you sense. Approach script and results as if you’re playing the game “20 Questions” where whatever pops first into your mind is the right answer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the staircase imagery everyone has seen a staircase. So everyone can remember one in their mind’s eye.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some people have developed creative visual skills and may feel comfortable picturing a fantasy staircase or combining imagined elements with actual staircase.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But everyone can remember one they’ve seen. Don’t use the “I don’t see anything” excuse. Remember a staircase and you will see it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more you use the script, the more you get.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;b&gt;Script&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Release the weight of your body into the support of the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice how your back makes contact with the support of the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relax the back of your legs....the back of your hips....your lower back, middle back, and upper back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Feel the weight and relaxation of the back of your body sinking through the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relax the back of your shoulders / the back of your arms / the back of your neck / and the back of your head.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wiggle and make any adjustments needed to relax the back of your body into the ground more fully. Melt into the support of the floor/bed completely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, notice the weight of your body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your legs, as they rest on the floor. Let your legs be heavy. Let your thighs, feet and toes relax. Release, relax, let go of them completely. Let the weight of your pelvis sink into the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your rib cage. Let the back ribs melt into the floor/bed. Feel your abdomen expand with each inhalation. As you exhale, let the belly fully contract. Like a giant balloon inflating and completely deflating. Relaxing deeper with each deep breath.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your shoulders and arms, as they rest on the floor/bed. Let your arms be so heavy that they sink through the floor/bed. Then release them completely. Let go. Grass, flowers, sand, trees, birds, animals, mountains, water etc. (If you are not visually gifted, imagine what you like to see.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Engage all your senses. What do you smell? What textures are around you? Do you feel sunlight, a breeze? Are there sounds?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You are totally safe and protected as you follow this path. Stroll around looking around for awhile.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eventually you notice a gate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are in front of the gate look up in the sky, you notice your name written in the sky in clouds. As you watch, the clouds dissolve as clouds do. The sky is clear and your name is gone. You feel comfortable with this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reach for the door of the gate, open it and pass through to a past life experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(You can take whatever life pops in or ask for a specific life. For instance say and know “I now pass into the life where I learn about ______________________”)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Whatever comes to mind, accept and go with the flow as if it’s an imagination game. There will be clues that assure you of the value of what you get.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look at your feet. What types of covering, if anything, are on your feet? Gradually move your awareness up your body noticing what clothing you have on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look around you, what are surroundings like? (Remember just go with your first impression. If things are vague, move over for a closer look.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you haven’t yet noticed anyone else there, look around for other people. (In some cases it is possible that you are the only one there.) Notice what other people are wearing and doing. If you want to, approach the others and ask questions. (Nothing there can bother you now and clues there can help with issues in the present. If you don’t like what is around you ask for the lesson in it to go to another scene.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ask yourself things you’d like to know. Such as what is my name, what year is it, what is this location called.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tell your mind to show you the happiest time you experienced in that lifetime. Personally I prefer to skip the death but you can ask for that scene. You can ask to go to the space in between lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I like to end by asking for the most important lesson learned in that lifetime. The answer is usually a word or phrase rather than a particular scene as it sums up the entire life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When finished you can just open your eyes or you can return to the gate you entered lifetime and go back through.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Thirty minutes is long enough to spend on this script. You can choose one method below or a combination.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;You might want to write them daily in a journal.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Read them to yourself or aloud.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Post your favorites on cards and either carry them with you or tape affirmation cards where you will see them throughout the day.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make a recording in your own voice and play it as you fall into sleep is a very effective method.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As you use your preferred method include mental visualization using as many of your five senses (sight, sound smell, taste, touch) as appropriate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also include different emotional feelings such as love, protection, nurturing, joy. &lt;b&gt;Emotion is a fuel which makes affirmations more powerful. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be aware of breathing deep into the abdomen. As if you are sending the energy inside yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can add your own affirmations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Write them in present tense.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Write what you want, no “reverse” positives which would be using words such as no, never, not or don’t. For instance – I never strike out. The correct version is I always hit the ball exactly where I want it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can personalize these affirmations to your sport by adding the name of your sport, position you play or equipment you use.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end of the affirmation list I give some examples of how you might add your sport to the affirmations that you like.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;I am on top of my game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I learn and improve every time I play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have fun and enjoy my game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My score improves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more I practice the better I get.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am improving every day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I learn from mistakes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I stay calm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I play from a state of focus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am totally focused on my game as soon as I begin playing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am in control.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I learn from watching other players.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I feel confident during my game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My focus increases as I play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am happy with myself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I feel secure that I am progressing each time I play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I stay calm, focused and relaxed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My zone is being calm and focused. Personally I never cared for that technique but you can add it to the below relaxation script if that style works for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can record this script and listen to it for even deeper relaxation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;h4&gt;Release the weight of your body into the support of the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice how your back makes contact with the support of the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relax the back of your legs....the back of your hips....your lower back, middle back, and upper back. Feel the weight and relaxation of the back of your body sinking through the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relax the back of your shoulders / the back of your arms / the back of your neck / and the back of your head. Wiggle and make any adjustments needed to relax the back of your body into the ground more fully. Melt into the support of the floor/bed completely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, notice the weight of your body. Notice the weight of your legs, as they rest on the floor. Let your legs be heavy. Let your thighs, feet and toes relax. Release, relax, let go of them completely. Let your legs drift and float and now forget about them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your hips and pelvis, as they rest on the floor/bed. Let the weight of your pelvis sink into the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your rib cage. Let the back ribs melt into the floor/bed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Feel your abdomen expand with each inhalation. As you exhale, let the belly fully contract. Like a giant balloon inflating and completely deflating. Relaxing deeper with each deep breath.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your shoulders and arms, as they rest on the floor/bed. Let your arms be so heavy that they sink through the floor/bed. Then release them completely. Let go. Let them drift and float away and then forget about them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice the weight of your head, as it rests on the floor/bed. Let the head be heavy. Feel your neck and throat release and relax.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relax the muscles of your face / relax your eyes and eyelids / your cheeks melt into relaxation / release, relax, let go of your jaw / your forehead and eyebrows smooth and relaxed / feel your scalp melt into relaxation. Your whole head and face totally relaxed, released.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Become aware of your breathing. Notice each inhalation relaxing the front of your body, and each exhalation relaxing the whole back of your body. The ultimate quickest way to relax is to breathe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Details – Time, Setting, Clothing, Posture&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What time of day is best to practice is whenever it will best fit your schedule. For beginners to make meditation a habit it is recommended to set a definite time. This way if you miss your meditation appointment you are aware of the omission and can reschedule with yourself before the day is over.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When beginning to meditate, it is good to have a routine or ritual. Routine and ritual will key the mind into what is going to follow. The routine / ritual can be simple or elaborate, whatever suits your personality.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A basic routine is deciding to relax and meditate every day at the same time and in the same setting. Meditating in the same place when starting is also helpful to develop habit and focus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The optimum setting is one that is comfortable and quiet with minimum distractions obviously away from telephones, TV, adults or children interrupting. Some meditators have to compromise on comfort to gain quiet. I know people who meditate in their bathroom or garage to access quiet time. You might want to try several locations before settling on your favorite. If you are interrupted, just acknowledge what is happening and return to your practice when possible. Eventually you will be able to be in a light meditative state anywhere, even with your eyes open.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ritual can be as simple as just knowing it is the time that you decided to meditate and going to your meditation place. Or, you can elaborate and use candles, incense, crystals and other background objects that aid your sensation of peace or power. I do not recommend using music during meditation as your mind will listen to the music instead of focusing. Keeping brief notes or a journal on your daily sessions is also recommended.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is best to wear non-restrictive clothing with as much natural fiber as possible. Loosen belts, ties and if possible remove shoes and socks for some styles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sit however is comfortable for you. If you enjoy sitting with a pillow on the floor, go for it. It is also perfectly acceptable to sit with a straight back in a chair and let the chair support your back. (I sit in a chair with my back supported and my legs crossed under me.) Your legs do not need to be crossed and the feet can rest on the floor. Observe the position of your shoulders, neck and head. Relax your shoulders down and lengthen them straight out. Relax your neck muscles. Feel that your head is balanced and centered on your neck. Image that your head is a fish bowl and if it is tipped forward or back, you will spill water and fish out! Check if your jaw is relaxed by allowing the lower jaw to drop slightly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Breathe through your nose. Begin each lesson observing a few breathes expanding the abdomen on the inhale and contracting the abdomen on the exhale. More detailed breathing instructions are given in the Zen lesson.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How long to meditate? A ten to fifteen minute meditation session will give you results. If you choose to meditate longer, it is because you enjoy the activity (or should I say non-activity). Greater results are not necessarily achieved by time spent in practice as much as your consistency and concentration during practice. Decide how long your meditation will be. Choose whatever works best for you to time the session. Set a timer to ring when your session ends or tell your mind to alert you when the set time has passed. Eventually your mind will know precisely when your set time is up. It's a matter of teaching someone how to restructure their approach to their problem and manage it better."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the past many experts had dismissed the effects of hypnosis as nothing more than an elaborate form of compliance behavior.&lt;br /&gt;The idea was that people who performed ridiculous acts in hypnotist stage shows were basically acting a part and doing what was expected of them.&lt;br /&gt;Modern equipment shows evidence that proved the compliance theory wrong.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tests and brain scans on hypnotized volunteers has pinpointed a frontal lobe region of the brain called the cingulate gyrus which controls behavior and monitors mistakes.&lt;br /&gt;In hypnotized subjects, this area of the brain appeared to be working differently than in people who were not hypnotized.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Psychologist Dr Peter Naish, from the Open University in Milton Keynes, “The evidence really, really, is there. Hypnosis is not miraculous, it is for real. Something is going on. (Perhaps even before birth. There is hypnotic regression information that a fetus is aware of what their mother is experiencing.) Everything we learn becomes part of our neural associations and pathways.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We’ve all heard the statement old habits die hard which is a way of saying the habit is wired into our sub-conscious response pattern. Some patterns or reasons for a habit aren’t even recognized consciously.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hypnosis, meditation and visualization are three similar processes for accessing a creative area of the sub-conscious mind where habit patterns can be rewritten.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many habit error patterns resist change by conventional conscious methods, even when the subject really wants the change, because of the sub-conscious programming.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Behavior is determined by habit patterns imprinted or programmed in the brain. From weight loss to quitting smoking I've seen dramatic successful results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I received Advanced Hypnotherapy Certification from the Hypnotism Training Institute of San Diego in 1989 after first completing their Basic Hypnotism course in 1988.(HTI was approved by the Superintendent of SD Schools for continuing education credits and certification. Beware of the one day diploma mills.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For two years I refined my hypnosis skills with co-workers, friends and their friends. Then I worked as a hypnotherapist in the spa at the Kent Woman’s Fitness Club with members and general public. The most frequent requests were for weight loss, quitting smoking and confidence building.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I relocated to Encinitas CA in 1995 and had a private practice there. Along with the issues mentioned above, I worked with phobias, past life regression, stress, job interviewing, anger control, memory, panic attacks and pain management including childbirth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Quite frequently the hypnosis sessions yielded so much more than was expected by both the client and myself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In session after session I observed the ability the mind has to use imagery to heal and fix problems. I realized that in a relaxed state, clients would have imagery come to them that was symbolic of what their problem needed. This was very potent because areas of stress could be worked on indirectly through analogies. The client would get imagery that was perfectly on target. All I had to do was help them reach a relaxed state, ask client what they saw, heard and or felt, then use their own imagery for what their session was dealing with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Deep, slow breathing is the first step to being relaxed and will help you achieve self-hypnosis, meditation and visualization. (Meditation and visualization access the mind in a manner similar to hypnosis.) There are hundreds of breathing exercises. Find one or several that suit you. Deep breathing raises blood oxygen levels which aids mental performance and ironically also quiets the mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As you practice relaxing your body consciously, eventually you will find you are able to stay relaxed during the rest of the day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1998 I left a California beach front cottage to care for my aging parents in Hartford Connecticut.
